Starting on March 14th in Portland, Oregon, we're setting out on a 6-week cross-country roadtrip to spread the good word of the gap year. As we traverse the nation, stopping along the way at America's most epic natural and man-made sites, we'll also be pumping out articles and social media posts all about gap time.
We'll cover everything from the basics -- for example, what exactly is a gap year? -- to more in-depth questions like whether you should consider a domestic or international program, how to talk to your parents about taking time off, and what colleges and employers really think about the gap year.
We'll be tracking the whole trip on Insta, cutting up behind-the-scenes specials on Snapchat and tweeting up a storm from coast to coast. We'll also be hosting live video chats on Periscope from the lobby of Starwood Hotel's Aloft in each state, so make sure you're following to join in on the discussion.
So why are we doing this? For a few reasons:
- It's freaking fun to do a cross-country roadtrip, especially when you're with your best friend.
- Life should be full of random adventures. We love the gap year so much is because it's full of the unexpected, it forces you to get out of your comfort zone and it puts you face-to-face with new people, places and feelings. That's what we're hoping to encounter on the trip.
- It's a cool way to get the word out about the gap year. Plus, we're stopping at bookstores all across the country to show them the book...and bookstores are one of our favorite places of. all. time. We're psyched to check out all the local, independent shops that value learning just as much as we do.
- For you! We know not everyone can just up and leave for 6 weeks at any time (though you CAN leave for 6 weeks, or more, at a time if you plan it right!), so we want to bring the adventure to you, wherever you are.
And of course, this trip wouldn't be complete without stories and input from all of you. We'd love to hear from you if you took a gap year, or even if you're just considering it. We're big believers that things work better when we work together, so hit us up and let us know what you'd love to see.
